Scripts

Parents play a powerful role in shaping kids' choices about substances, but talking with other families can be daunting. Our simple scripts help you set boundaries, share expectations, and collaborate for safer, substance-free experiences. Together, we can build a network of informed parents committed to healthier futures.

Research

Research shows that limiting access to substances significantly reduces underage use and its risks. This section highlights key findings, best practices, and simple, effective actions you can take to help protect kids. With the right knowledge and small changes, parents, educators, and communities can create a safer, healthier future for youth.

BTI Party Guide

Hosting a party should be fun, but safety is key. Allowing underage drinking or substance use can lead to fines, lawsuits, and criminal charges under Social Host Ordinances. Whether at your home or a rented venue, setting clear boundaries and maintaining a substance-free environment ensures a safe and enjoyable event for all.

Talking to Your Teen

Talking about substance use isn’t easy. Your child may try to avoid the discussion, and you might feel unsure how to proceed. But avoiding it isn’t the answer. Kids who talk with their parents about substance use are up to 50% less likely to use substances. These conversations can also reduce the likelihood of needing professional help later. So start the conversation when the time feels right—and keep it going!

Social Hosting Laws

All Marin cities and the county have adopted a Social Host Ordinance (SHO) holding hosts accountable when two or more minors possess or consume alcohol, cannabis, or other substances on private property. First enacted in 2006 to deter underage drinking, it now includes cannabis and other controlled substances.
